There’s one NFL squad that is a cut above the rest on the Fourth of July and that is the New England Patriots. However, was the team really created to honor America? What exactly was the reason the name come to be? What other names did the club think of before adopting the current name in 1959?
Here’s everything you must be aware of:
What is you the Patriots called after?
The first American patriots are, as you could have imagined. The franchise was founded in Boston in the year 1959 and has been in existence since Boston is considered to be the capital of the nation and where those who led the American colonists’ rebellion against British dominance in 1770 “Patriots” was the most popular option for the city’s soccer team.
What is the reason why this name be chosen?
Boston billionaire Billy Sullivan Jr. was given his team with one of the American Football League (AFL) expansion franchise in 1959 and immediately solicited outside suggestions for the team’s name, as the Pro Football Hall of Fame note. In the end, a panel comprised of Boston sportswriters narrowed down the field, and settled on “Patriots.” The team started playing under that name in the year 1960 and officially joined the NFL in the year 1970 and then moved to Foxborough in the year following and exchanged the “Boston Patriots” ID for their current identity.
What were other names considered?
In the days before Patriots were known as the Patriots the panel of selectors also looked at several other teams that honored Boston’s significant contribution to American history. The options comprised Beantowners, Braves, Colonials, Minutemen and Bulls, according to the Sports Chief. MLB’s Atlanta Braves were stationed in Boston for two seasons (1912-1935 and 1941-1952) prior to the NFL Patriots’ debut, and therefore they could have already had as the Boston Braves nickname. The Minutemen eventually made their way to Boston in the form of a later-gone North American Soccer League team between 1974 and 1976.
