Symptoms and Treatment
Listeria within healthy people can cause temporary symptoms like stiffness, headache, fever and gastrointestinal discomfort such as diarrhea. But in senior citizens, children or those with weak immunity, the infection may get more severe, and cause death in certain cases. This infection may also trigger stillbirths and miscarriages in pregnant women. If you are experiencing these symptoms following having consumed these foods and drinks, it is advised to seek out a medical professional immediately. 2
For treatment, for patients with mild symptoms there is no need for treatment However, severe or recurring illnesses can be treated with antibiotics, according to Mayo Clinic. 3Additionally during pregnancy the prompt treatment with antibiotics could aid in preventing the infection from harming the baby, Mayo notes on their website. 3
