Derrick White Named to 2024 USA Basketball Men’s National Team
Derrick White (Boston Celtics) has been selected for the 2024 USA Basketball Men’s National Team that will play in the Olympic Games Paris 2024, scheduled for July 26-Aug. 11, 2024.
USA Basketball announced today that Derrick White (Boston Celtics) was named for the 2024 USA Basketball Men’s National Team that will play in the Olympic Games Paris 2024, scheduled for July 26-August. 11 2024. White was picked by USA Basketball’s the Men’s National Team managing director Grant Hill.
As previously announced, Kawhi Leonard who was selected in the 2024 USA Men’s National Team in April, is not going to participate in the Olympic Games. USA Basketball and the L.A. Clippers decided that that it’s in his best interests to focus on the rest of the summer working on the coming NBA season.
“I am happy to announce that Derrick will compete at his first Olympic Games on the heels of a championship season in Boston,” Hill stated. “We are looking forward to his joining our team over the next few days while we prepare for Paris.
“I am grateful to Kawhi for his dedication for his country’s USA Male National Team. He was able of representing in the United States, but USA Basketball and Clippers management believed it was essential to give Kawhi to get ready to play in this NBA game.”
Alongside White in addition to White, the 2024 Men’s USA National Team features Bam Adebayo (Miami Heat), Devin Booker (Phoenix Suns), Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors), Anthony Davis (Los Angeles Lakers), Kevin Durant (Phoenix Suns), Anthony Edwards (Minnesota Timberwolves), Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers), Tyrese Haliburton (Indiana Pacers), Jrue Holiday (Boston Celtics) LeBron James (Los Angeles Lakers) and Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics).
White is a seven-year NBA veteran, has joined White on the USA Men’s National Team after having helped lead the Celtics to an historic 18 the NBA Championship in June. In 2023-23, the 30-year-old player scored 15.2 per game, 5.2 assists, and 4.2 Rebounds and was named on the NBA All-Defensive Second Team for the second time in succession.
White was chosen for the 2024 USA National Team’s Men’s selection in the month of January. White was a finalist for his 2020 spot on the USA Men’s National Team and was a part of the 2018 USA World Cup Team.
Leonard is a part of the USA Basketball family since 2012 was a part of both USA Select Teams in 2012 and 2014. He also was a player for USA White in the 2015 USA Basketball Showcase.
The 2024 Senior Men’s National team boasts 11 Olympic appearances, and holds 10- Olympic gold medals, as well as three FIBA World Cup titles. In all, the U.S. will take 11 NBA All-Stars, four NBA MVPs, and seven NBA champions to Paris.
In 2024, the USA Men’s National Team will be headed by the head trainer Steve Kerr (Golden State Warriors) and is assisted by Mark Few (Gonzaga University), Tyronn Lue (LA Clippers) and Erik Spoelstra (Miami Heat). In the summer of 2018, the group was the coaches of the 2023 USA Basketball Men’s National Team to a fourth-place finish in the 2023 FIBA Men’s World Cup in Manila.
The 2024 Olympic Games are set for July 26-Aug. 11. It is expected that the U.S. men open group compete at Lille, France, against Serbia on the 28th of July. The next game is against South Sudan on July 31 and Puerto Rico on Aug. 3.
The USA Basketball Showcase is an event series designed to the USA both women and men’s national squads for the international stage begins on July 10th, at 10:30 p.m. ET when the United States hosts Canada at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas at 10:30 p.m. ET streaming live on FS1.
