Alex de Minaur withdraws from Wimbledon 2024 because of a hip injury
Australian tennis pro Alex de Minaur withdrew from the Wimbledon 2024 tennis tournament due to an injury to his hip. He was set to face Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals.

Alex de Minaur has pulled out of Wimbledon 2024 due to a hip injury. The Australian tennis player was scheduled to play Novak Djokovic in the men’s singles quarter-finals at the Grand Slam tournament on Wednesday.
Presently ranked ninth in the world rankings of tennis, Alex de Minaur injured his hip in his round of 16 match in the round of 16 match against Arthur Fils of France.
“I’m devastated but I had to pull out due to a hip injury,” de Minaur said in a press conference. “I felt a loud crack during the last three points of my match against Fils, and the scan on Tuesday confirmed that this was the injury.”
“It’s obvious that at this point in my career this was my biggest game of my life. I was determined to do everything I could to be a part of it. The issue I face when getting out and playing is that a single stretch one slide, one any thing could cause the injury to change between three and six weeks to a period of four months.” The Aussie added.
The game with the seven-time winner Novak Djokovic was set to be the first quarter-final match in six years in the Wimbledon Championships.
De Minaur’s departure signifies that Djokovic reached the 13th singles men’s Wimbledon semi-final, matching Roger Federer’s record from his Open Era. The Serb will play Taylor Fritz or Lorenzo Musetti in the semi-finals on Friday.
Alex de Minaur, meanwhile has played in the last eight rounds of the French Open in June and won the ATP grass-court championship at’s-Hertogenbosch in the beginning of this month. The player is also part of the Australian tennis team that will compete at the Paris 2024 Olympics and is in a race against time to prepare for the event in France.
There were fourteen Australian tennis athletes included in both the women’s and men’s singles matches during Wimbledon 2024. The only exception was Alex de Minaur, however did make it to into the 3rd round.
James Duckworth, Rinky Hijikata, Chris O’Connell, Max Purcell and Alex Bolt were ousted in the first round of men’s singles.
Jordan Thompson, Aleksandar Vukic, Thanasi Kokkinakis and Adam Walton were eliminated in the second, while Alexei Popyrin’s match ended in the pre-quarterfinals.
As for women’s singles tournament, Ajla Tomljanovic as well as Olivia Gadecki suffered first round eliminations, while the world number. 82 Daria Saville was eliminated in to Daria Saville in the 2nd round of matches.
In doubles for men, Australia’s Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson have reached the semi-finals, after beating Argentine team Andres Molteni as well as Maximo Gonzalez with 6-8, 6(8)-7(10) 6-3 scoreline in the quarterfinals.

The women’s duo competition, the world’s No. 9. Ellen Perez and USA’s Nicole Melichar-Martinez lost by Nicole Melichar-Martinez in round two, while Daria Saville, and Chinese People’s Republic’s Yuan Yue ended their tournament in the opening round.
The Australian duo of Matthew Ebden and Ellen Perez are among the top players of the mixed doubles tournament as their initial round match against Andres Molteni from the USA and Asia Muhammad stands suspended due to delays in the rain.
Purcell along with the Ukrainian teammate Dayana Yastremska fell in the second round.
