PARIS, France — A former Gophers volleyball star Airi Miyabe (2019-21) is training to play with Team Japan in the 2024 Olympic Games.
Japan will be competing in Pool B alongside Poland, Brazil and Kenya. Two teams that are the top in the pool will progress to the knockout stage, which is comprised of 16 teams. The matches will be accessible to stream online on Peacock .

The University of Minnesota volleyball team has played a prominent role in the Olympics in the past two decades. This will continue at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the role of the team was formerly known as Gopher Airi Miyabe (2019-21) was selected to the Japan’s Olympic team for the 2019-21 season. In the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, Gophers alumni Tori Dixon (’14), Hannah Tapp (’16) and Sarah Wilhite Parsons (’16) were selected as alternates for members of the U.S. Olympic team. Minnesota volleyball is represented in every Olympic Games since 2004.
Miyabe, a former outside hitter at Minnesota, plays middle blocker for Japan. She was awarded her debut Olympic team spot following an outstanding display at the Volleyball Nations League. She was on the bench during the semifinals of the tournament and scored 11 points with six kills as well as four blocks and an Ace to lead Japan to their first VNL final, an 3-2 win against Brazil. 1 ranked Brazil.
As Gophers, Miyabe was a three-time Academic All-Big Ten player from 2019 to. While in Minneapolis the Gophers reached an appearance in a Final Four, an Elite Eight and an Sweet 16. Her most successful season was in 2021, where she was a part of 27 games and averaged 2.97 kills. She also had 0.93 digs, and 0.27 blocks in a set. Miyabe hit .240 throughout the season and was promoted to a role that she could play in later on the season. The 2021 Sweet 16 match against Baylor, Miyabe stepped up for an all-time high of 18 kills on .324 hitting. She was selected on the NCAA Madison Regional All-Tournament Team as well as being AVCA All-North Region Honorable Mention in 2021.
