Malone made a stunning recovery from a painful knee injury in March 2023. He won the third all-around national championship this year. It appeared like the U.S. men’s best chance to win an all-around title in Paris. But, in the first division, Malone fell once on pommel horse, and twice on the high bar, which knocked him out of the high bar and all-around event final.
“(It was) simple mistakes that I usually don’t do,” Malone said. “But I’m sure it occurs. It’s sports. You’ll never be flawless. Therefore, I’m going to start my day on the treadmill, re-establish my foundation using a few basics and then get ready for the team’s finals.”
In the second division Hashimoto’s chances to defend his title was shattered when he fell from the bar’s high point which prevented him from progressing towards the next.
