Canadian teens McIntosh is a potential star, Americans Grimes and Weyant make silver-bronze debuts in women’s 400m IM
On a podium that was all-North American, Katie Grimes and Emma Weyant of Team USA finished silver-bronze behind Summer McIntosh, the 17-year-old Canadian superstar and the first Olympic medalist in gold.

McIntosh McIntosh, the fastest woman ever to compete in this event and was in a category that was her own right from the beginning of the four-stroke, eight-lap race. She won in 4:27.71 she won with 5.69 second over Grimes. This was the largest winning margin in the competition at the Olympics since 1984.
“I was extremely happy to have accomplished my goal and to be on at the top and win that gold award. It’s always all about having fun and testing my body beyond the limit,” said McIntosh, who also won silver in the freestyle 400m Saturday evening. “I’m striving to do my best in making Team Canada proud, and create a positive example,” she added.
Grimes 18 years old, she won the first Olympic medal when she placed fourth in the freestyle 800m during the Tokyo Olympics at the age of 15 and the youngest athlete on Team USA in any sport during that Games.
She had the chance to set a record later in Paris. There has never been a woman who has won an Olympic medal in pools and in open water swims during the Olympics. Grimes will be swimming in the women’s open water 10km event scheduled for August. 8.
Weyant also added bronze to her silver medal she took home at the same competition in Tokyo.
“I’m extremely pleased being back at the top of this podium. It’s been a tough time for my. Being back on the field with my teammates is a blessing to me. It’s an opportunity to redeem myself. This has been my attitude throughout the year,” Weyant said.
