New England Patriots starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett sustained an injury to his throwing shoulder in the first quarter of Sunday’s 20-10 preseason loss to the Washington Commanders , with coach Jerod Mayo saying the veteran could have continued if the plan were to play him longer.
“I talked to him, but we’ll see [Monday]. You always feel a little bit more sore the next day,” Mayo stated. “But he said he was good.”
Brissett grinned when being sacked by Washington’s KJ Henry on the sixth offensive line play with the 255-pound, 6-foot-4 Henry being able to get in the free position because of a blocker’s error and the entire weight of his body crashing directly on Brissett’s right shoulder. When Brissett was getting up and sat down, he put his left hand over his chest to grasp the front of the shoulder.
He was able to stay in the game and completed an 8-yard pass in the next play, after that, he made a perfect long throw towards receiver K.J. Osborn who was then dropped.
Brissett was removed from the game following that Brissett was removed from the game, the decision Mayo declared was the intention in advance to ensure that the rookie Drake Maye could continue to play until the final second quarter.
“He would have been able to continue,” Mayo stated about Brissett who stayed for the rest of the night in the hospital.
In lieu in place of Brissett, Maye finished 13-of-20 for the 126 yards and scored a touchdown. It happened during his first drive. Maye also scored an impressive 17-yard run. This was the key factor that led to the team’s sole touchdown.
If Brissett’s injury proves to be more serious, Mayo and his coaching team will determine whether they’re able to turn the responsibility over to Maye who is the third. 3 overall selection at the time of his draft. Mayo would not commit to the selection following Sunday’s game, saying he would have to look over the video.
“I would like to sit here and say 100 percent, he is our second-best quarterback on our roster right now,” Mayo declared.
The biggest issue that could be a hindrance to this possibility is the offensive cast around it and the offensive line, especially. The Patriots the most offensive line (minus center David Andrews) was cited for eight penalties on Sunday. There was also a bad shotgun snap, a second erroneous center-quarterback exchange, and an error in blocking on the play during which Brissett was tackled. The penalties for four of them involved alignment issues with three penalties on right tackle Chukwuma Okorafor and one against right tackle Mike Onwenu.
Alongside Brissett and Maye In addition to Maye and Brissett, the Patriots also have the rookie Joe Milton III and veteran third-year Bailey Zappe on their quarterback depth chart prior to the deadline on Tuesday to reduce the roster down to 53 players.
Since the beginning of the training camp Mayo has always maintained the fact that Brissett is the primary player and that Maye being a possibility to be the winner in the event that Mayo “lights it up.”
When asked if he felt at ease if called upon to play an opening match of the season Maye replied: “Yeah, I think I would feel ready. I think I’m ready for whatever this football team asks of me and ready to get out there and try to help beat the Bengals Week 1.”
