Walmart has issued a recall of more than 11,000 cases of applesauce that were sold in the stores all across the U.S. The juice was found contain harmful levels of arsenic inorganic.

 

WASHINGTON (AP) — Walmart has recalled nearly 10,000 cases of apple juice sold in stores across the U.S. that were found to contain potentially harmful levels of inorganic arsenic.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration gave the recall a stricter classification on Friday following the announcement on August. 15. The new classification states that the affected product might temporarily trigger adverse health effects but is not likely to cause irreparable or serious health issues.

The recall covers 9,535 cases Great Value brand apple juice that are sold across the states of 25, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. The Florida-based company Refresco Beverages US Inc. has voluntarily removed the six-packs contaminated consisting of eight-ounce (227-gram) Juice bottles following finding quantities of a chemical contamination overcame standard for the industry.

A representative from Refresco has not yet responded to requests for comment on Sunday.

“The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority,” Walmart spokesperson Molly Blakeman said in a statement. “We have removed this product from our impacted stores and are working with the supplier to investigate.”

Low levels of inorganic arsenic and organic arsenic can be found in a variety of food items according the National Institutes of Health. Tests are routine as slight elevations of any form of arsenic can trigger symptoms like nausea stomach discomfort nausea, diarrhea, numbness, and muscle cramps.

Inorganic arsenic is more dangerous for humans than natural form of the mineral arsenic and the health consequences of exposure are more grave, according to FDA. It is believed that the Environmental Protection Agency has labeled arsenic inorganic as a cancer-causing agent, or a substance that can cause cancer.

The levels in the apple juice recalled bottles are so low that the FDA doesn’t expect that they could cause serious health effects.

It is reported that the FDA has not released any the reports of illnesses that may be associated to the recall of apple juice.
