It’s almost time to cast your eyes to the sky for July’s wild full moon: The Buck Moon.
When will the full moon be on July 20, 2024?
It is estimated that the Buck Moon will hit peak illumination at 3:17 a.m. Pacific on Sunday 21 July 2024. The moon will remain as full in the evening before and after the peak to those who are not stargazers as per space.com.
What is the reason why July’s full moon is known as”the Buck Moon?
Male deer antlers start to increase in late spring, gaining up to a quarter-inch every each day in accordance with the Farmers’ Almanac. The long days produce hormones that begin the growth every spring. In July the antlers are full velvet for male deer which is why they have that it is called the Buck Moon.

In addition, we are currently at the end of “Milky Way” season for JTNP … which means that you can see the Milky Way is most visible from this vantage point at this time of the year.
However, there is a catch. You’ll have to pick between full moon or Milky Way viewing, since a bright moon could impair any view you have of the universe.
What is the August Full Moon?
The Sturgeon Moon will reach its peak brightness in the 11th hour at 11.26 a.m. Pacific on Monday, August. 19. It’s a supermoon and will be larger and brighter than previous full moons we’ve seen thus far this year.
Full moon schedule 2024
Every full moon comes with its own unique name. In North America we take the names of those nights of the full moon in the form of Native Americans from different areas of North America.
In the 1930s, the Maine Farmers’ Almanac began publishing Native American names for full moons, as per NASA. Here’s an idea of when the others full moons will be predicted to occur in 2024, in accordance with NASA:

- Oct. 17, Hunter’s Moon
- Nov. 15, Beaver Moon
- Dec. 15, Cold Moon
