Billy HORSCHEL, Overnight leader is embracing Open opportunity while he tries to win his the first major of his career.
Billy Horschel is finally here.
By The Open
On Saturday, he played in the driving rain in a short-sleeved shirt. The fire and desire to win a first major burning brightly enough to keep him warm.
He and his with his partner Justin Rose were equal in height, similar build and dress styles, with caps with backwards-facing and a penchant for pleasing others.
And how did Horschel entertain.
A birdie putt of 32 feet on the 7th pushes Horschel to three shots off the lead. He continued to climb as the rest of the field fell back.
A first mistake at the eleventh hole which was the toughest hole golf course of his career, didn’t stop him from mastering the greens during a moving day.
In the sand there was a similar tale in which he managed to pull off a fantastic escape after amazing escape.
A gratifying saving in 13 came after a sharp slope in the bunker on the par-3 14th hole, in which the player chipped himself out of the hole. The 16th was the same, and he repeated the same feat.
The crowd was amazed at the skill he displayed in an act that was almost unattainable. Horschel couldn’t believe that he did not hit the ball.
This is the hallmark of the champion. Another thing is that even when his heart is aching to be a winner this Sunday, he’s constantly reminding himself that no matter what happens chances are that it will happen again.
“I’ve learned lots about golf after playing for 15 years professionally. I believe I’ve learned to manage my feelings,” he said.
“I’ve learnt to accept many things. I’m not afraid of failing. I am a bit grumpy the moment I’m not doing well and get a lot of criticism from the outside and let the criticisms influence my perception of myself.
“I believe that should it be mine tomorrow at my hour, then it’s my time and I’ll be thrilled. If not, we’ll take off back on the horse and we’ll be working hard to return to the same position.”
