Dallas Mavericks have made moves to strengthen their backcourt. According ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski the Dallas Mavericks traded shooting guard Quentin Grimes and three second round draft picks to Detroit Pistons for veteran Tim Hardaway Jr.
Wojnarowski points out, that the Toronto Raptors will be selecting a second-round selection in 2025 and then two more picks for 2028.
Dallas has some financial flexibility by swapping Hardaway for Grimes. ESPN’s Tim MacMahon says that it gives the team the ability to offer Derrick Jones Jr. an important part of the non-taxpayer midlevel exemption. Nico Harrison, Mavericks’ GM, is focused on re-signing Jones.
Grimes has signed a four-year contract worth $11.1 million with the New York Knicks. The deal is guaranteed. He will make $4.2 million in the next season, which is his final year of his contract. He can extend his contract before the season starts.
Hardaway signed with the Mavericks a contract for four years, worth $75 million. In 2024-25, he will make $16.1 million as a Piston. Next summer, he will become an unrestricted agent.
Grimes spent the last season playing for both the Knicks as well as Pistons. In February, New York sent him to Detroit as part of a trade that sent Bojan Bogdanovic back to the Knicks.
Grimes played only six games for the Pistons, before he missed the rest of the season in order to recover from lingering muscle pain related to an injury to his knee caused by a bone bruise that he suffered in January.
Grimes, in his third NBA season played 51 games for the Knicks as well as the Pistons. He averaged 7.0 point on 37.2% of his shots, 2.0 rebounds, and 1.3 assist.
Hardaway, who is 32 years old, was left out of the Dallas rotation in the final part of their season, which culminated with the NBA Finals. He played in 79 games during the regular season and 14 games during the playoffs. He averaged 14.8 points, 40.2% shooting percentage, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assist during the regular season. In the playoffs he averaged 4.4 points with 37.9% shooting percentage and 1.8 rebounds.
