The Miami Dolphins have agreed with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on a four-year contract extension valued at a franchise-record $212.4 million, a person with knowledge of the deal said Friday.
With an annual average salary of $53.1 million a year Tagovailoa will be ranked 3rd in the NFL with respect to quarterback salaries, ahead of Jax’s Trevor Lawrence and Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow. The contract includes $167 million guaranteed, which is the eighth highest among quarterbacks, according to the source, who spoke under the condition of anonymity since they weren’t allowed to reveal the details.
ESPN first reported on the extension in the first place, attribution of the terms to the organization which is the representative of Tagovailoa, Athletes First.
The Dolphins didn’t announce the extension, however it did share the video on Tagovailoa on Facebook on Friday afternoon.
Tagovailoa continued to play under the contract he had signed when the Dolphins selected him as the fifth overall pick of the draft in 2020. Tagovailoa wanted an agreement that was similar to those that were signed by Burrow and Justin Herbert, who were chosen in the same year. After signing their rookie contracts, Burrow and Herbert signed multiyear contracts that exceeded $200 million.
Through negotiations, Tagovailoa was a participant in offseason training sessions for the team and took part in a portion of the initial days of camp. He was fully-enrolled on Friday.
Tagovailoa who suffered several concussions during his three initial NFL seasons, has positioned himself for a huge pay raise with a non-injury and productive 2023. He scored 29 touchdowns, and the league’s best 4,624 yards.
The Dolphins were in the playoffs but they were eliminated in the opening round by Kansas City, the eventual Super Bowl champion Kansas City and extended their absence without a win in the playoffs.
The extension of the contract will ensure that Tagovailoa in Miami until 2028.
