WAIANAE VALLEY (HawaiiNewsNow) – Officers fatally shot a suspect accused of firing several rounds at multiple people in Waianae Valley on Wednesday night, Honolulu Police Chief Joe Logan said.

Police responded to reports of a fight in the street close to the residence located on Puhinalo Place shortly after 6 p.m.

According to Logan the suspect was just across the street from the spot where the shooting took place.

Logan told the police that the suspect was fighting with his girlfriend on the street, before her friend took her to his house. The suspect then entered his home and was armed with a firearm.

The rifle was pointed at the house of his relative and tried to shoot it, but failed, Logan said. He returned to his home, went out with a pistol and walked out across the street and fired four rounds at the house of his girlfriend’s friend.

A man has died and three others remain in hospital following a shooting by an officer in Waianae Valley on Wednesday evening, HPD said.

The officers who arrived were able to hear screaming in the house and saw a man with the gun in his hand.

Logan stated that officers repeatedly commanded the man to take his gun off but he resisted.

The result was that one officer shot two shots on the subject, Logan said.

They administered aid until paramedics arrived. the patient was declared dead on the scene.

As per Honolulu Emergency Medical Services, three victims were taken to a hospital in serious condition. They included three women aged 30 and older as well as one man who was 25 years old.

A woman aged 70 was injured after being attacked during the incident. However, EMS advised her to not be transported.

Two adult and two minors were at the residence, however they were not injured.

“It’s always tragic when a life is taken,” Logan said. “However, we are extremely thankful that the three individuals who were shot are expected to recover and that none of our officers were hurt.”

Based on court records, Awong holds 14 convictions in criminal court, including 11 felonies.

Logan said that his officers responded to two incidents in the past that involved Awong.

“One was a terrorist threatening in 2023 and then in 2022 there was a another domestic,” said Logan. “I believe the same two people, the girlfriend and her boyfriend.”

The second time a shooting has been conducted in Waianae in less than one week.

Logan says his officers require assistance from federal partners as well as the public to reduce gun violence.

“We need the community’s help, we can’t just walk in people’s homes and say, hey, you shouldn’t have a gun, let me check, it’s not how the law works,” said Logan. “It’s must be a collective effort from everyone working together. I think we’ll need support with our federal counterparts as well.”

Officer who shot his gun was put in administrative restraining order, a the standard procedure. He’s assigned to district 8 that covers Kapolei and Waianae as well as Waianae. He had four years of service as a patrol officer.

Logan confirmed that the gun used by the suspect was stolen, and that the firearm appeared to be made by the suspect.

The investigation is still ongoing.
