Jade Carey impacted by illness during gymnastics’s qualifying session
This year’s Olympic floor champion won’t have the chance the chance to defend her crown following an unexpected performance by Jade Carey in Sunday’s gymnastics qualifying session.
As Simone Biles was fighting through a leg injury Sunday in Paris, U.S. gymnastics teammate Jade Carey had her own hurdle to clear.
Carey disclosed to Olympics.com after the Sunday’s qualification session, that her unusually unpredictable performance wasn’t due to nerves it was due to illness.
“I just haven’t been feeling well for the last few days and I’ve been unable to eat, or drink anything,” Carey said.
During the floor routine, Carey made several unusual errors, including her last tumbling move. She seemed to be caught in mid-air during what could be the double tuck. She opted for a single tuck then falling onto her back, causing her to fall out of the bounds. She is the current Olympic floor champion came in last among all floor athletes, scoring an average of 10.633 and is not likely to have the chance to defend her Tokyo title.
“I felt like I had no energy today, and did not really have a clear idea of what was happening within my mind. Therefore, I thought that people should be aware of that, so they’re aware of the fact that there’s an issue.” Carey said.
However, Carey bounced back on vault with scores of 14.433 that was good enough to get her to the finals of vault along with Biles. Carey’s mother, Danielle, might have been the most anxious participant in the entire arena:
The women’s team competition will be held on July 30 as well as the vault women’s final takes place on the Saturday of August. 3.
