MEXICO CITY – Mexico’s president lashed out at U.S. funding for a Mexican anti-corruption nonprofit group Wednesday, and said he will send a diplomatic note to the U.S. government in protest .

the president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, President of the United States, declared that the group is a part of the opposition conservative and should not receive foreign funds or tax-deductible contributions. The president released financial details about the group, and pledged to introduce a bill Congress to amend the rules regarding tax-deductible contributions.

“I think that there is open intervention by the U.S. government in the sovereign affairs of Mexico,” Lopez Obrador said. Lopez Obrador also wrote an identical protest note in 2021 but without obvious results. It is the U.S. State Department generally doesn’t comment on diplomatic communications.

According to the documents that were presented at the morning briefing on the news, a tiny amount of money for the organization approximately $685,000was sourced via U.S. charitable foundations over the past eight years.

A bigger chunk of about 5 million dollars in the last yearsis believed to have come directly from the U.S. Agency for International Development that is managed through the State Department.

Lopez Obrador has complained about the issue for a long time and also said he’d send an email in the direction of U.S. President Joe Biden. “I am sure he has not been informed about this situation,” the Mexican president claimed. But Lopez Obrador already sent a similar letter to Biden in 2023.

Lopez Obrador said he will also appeal to tax and prosecutors authorities to investigate the donation.

Mexicans Anti-Corruption and Impunity claims that it has ties to the political parties. The group is a watchdog of the government’s spending and programs for alleged abuses. It was formed three years prior to when Lopez Obrador took office and has criticised previous administrations and other political parties.

The group has released statements that have criticized certain of Lopez Obrador’s most important initiatives, such as the denial of a construction project that was only partially completed Mexico City airport and the construction of the expensive tourist train that runs around Mexico City and the Yucatan Peninsula.

The founder of the group, Claudio X. Gonzalez has publicly endorsed opposing candidates previously.

USAID frequently supports civil society groups, mostly associated with democratic rights or human rights across a variety of countries. In a few countries, these organizations can be a source of trouble for local authorities.

Even as Lopez Obrador said tax deductions for the organization’s contributions were the use of public funds, he’s openly employed government television channels funded by taxpayers to promote opposition to the party in power.

The Mexican president has been a frequent target of journalists and civic as well as eco-friendly groups who have criticised his administration. He has also employed confidential tax and banking data to denounce the way they pay their employees and fundraise.

Lopez Obrador is the latest leader in Latin America, and around the globe who has voiced his displeasure over the funding from outside for non-governmental groups.

2013 was the year Bolivia’s president Evo Morales removed USAID from Bolivia in the belief that it was attempting to undermine his authority.

In recent times in the last few years, in recent years, the Nicaraguan government has enacted a variety of laws that make it more difficult for non-governmental organizations to run as well as in some instances, they have taken offices of nongovernmental organizations.
