Three years after the 49ers spent three first-round draft picks to acquire him, Trey Lance remains a work in progress.
Lance who only played in four contests for the 49ers and didn’t take part in any games last year following his trade to the Cowboys and saw plenty of time to play in Sunday’s preseason game versus the Rams. Cowboys Head coach Mike McCarthy said Lance, who was a player for one season in college requires training, so following Cooper Rush started and led the Cowboys offense for just one play, Lance played the rest of the game.
” Trying to get as much as I can with him,” McCarthy told ESPN. “You would like to watch him play through the offensive at a high-level. The movements and items we’re asking him conceptually do are all completely new. We’re just in need of work. We’ll need to take as long as we can. I know that I say it each time I speak about him. But he’s actually making great progress. He’s wired in the right way. He’s an excellent athlete. He has a lot to be done.”
Lance was able to complete 25 of his 41 passes, netting 188 yards with no interceptions or touchdowns along with three interceptions. These aren’t the most impressive figures however McCarthy claimed that Lance performed what was expected to him.
“I really liked his command,” McCarthy stated. “Frankly I tried . . . Make the most of every situation that we found ourselves in. So the fourth-down snaps are going to pay dividends in the near future. I am sure of it.”
Rush is in front of Lance to the Cowboys depth chart and there’s a chance Lance will remain on the bench for the whole season, as it was last year. If he’s going to grow in the preseason, that’s his opportunity to do so.
