When it comes to medals when it comes to medals, there is no doubt that the United States is the preferred choice to take home many medals. China will not be able to surpass that of the U.S. in the overall medal count, but it has an opportunity to win the most gold-medallion awards than Americans.
Which country is currently top of the list in terms of medals following the opening day of the competition? Here’s a look the Olympic medals (and continue reading for Team USA highlights from Day 1.).

The final Summer Olympics in which the United States did not top the medals list was the year 2008, in Beijing.
Nations always receive an extra medal when they are the host nation. France expects to nearly double the amount of gold medals it took home in Tokyo.
Team USA Highlights: Day 1
FIRST U.S. MEDAL
There were 13 gold medal events Sunday. They were supposed to be 14 events, but the for the men’s Street skating was delayed until Monday due to the weather.

Team America’s Kassidy Cook, and Sarah Bacon, that is. The two have been close since they were just 8 years old, won silver in the women’s 3m synchronized springboard final.
This was also the very first gold medal of the 2024 Olympic Games to Team USA.
China’s first gold medal at the Olympics was won by shooting air rifles of mixed teams.
USA-AUSTRALIA CONTINUES RIVALRY IN THE POOL
Americans Jack Alexy, Hunter Armstrong, Caeleb Dressel and Chris Guiliano combined to win the men’s freestyle relay 4x100m to win the first gold medal for Team USA at the Paris Olympics.
The Americans were able to finish in 3:09.28 to claim their third consecutive Olympic victory in the race.
Australia finished second with an average timing in the range of 3:10.35 and Italy won bronze with an timing of 3:10.70.
Be on the lookout for yourself as Team USA wins silver in the freestyle final of 4x100m just in a close second to Australia and just a hair better than China.
Australia changed the script in the women’s freestyle relay 4x100m, winning the gold medal against that of the U.S. and setting an Olympic record time of 3:28.92 during the process.
Team USA was crowned silver with an American record time of 3:30.20 and China won bronze.
The four swimmers who have awards for Team USA include Simone Manuel, Kate Douglass, Gretchen Walsh and Torri Huske.

KATIE LEDECKY, GRETCHEN WALSH SHINE
In the individual finals, superstar U.S. swimmer Katie Ledecky took home her 11 11th Olympic award on the weekend, taking bronze in the freestyle 400m during the 2024 Paris Olympics.
She ran a time of 4:00.86 to be second only to the Australian Ariarne Titmus who ran in 3:57.49 to take home a second consecutive bronze medal for the race.
In the meantime, the Connecticut’s Gretchen Walsh broke the Olympic record in the semifinals of the women’s 100m butterfly with the timing that was 55.38 seconds. Walsh was able to beat herself to break her world-record of 55.18.
Another fellow American Torri Huske clocked the second-fastest semifinal performance, clocking 56.0.
The final 100m butterfly is scheduled to take place on Sunday, at 2:40 p.m. ET.
