Las Vegas hit record highs of 120 degrees earlier this month and areas along the East Coast are currently under extreme heat warnings, but at Philadelphia International Airport on Sunday, there was record snowfall.
The most amazing part is that temperatures in the city reached temperatures of 94 degrees during the day.
The (very) tiny blizzard took place as a storm swept through the town, creating tiny hail. In terms of meteorology, that counts as an indication of snow–and it was enough to create records.
It’s not a common occurrence however it’s not an unusual one. It was the last time this occurred was during August in 2011 when snow traces were seen on two separate events (Aug. 1, and 18,). Also, it happened in the years 2008, 2006 and 1998. In addition to Sunday, small amounts of snow have been observed 14 times over the summer at Philadelphia’s airport.
Sunday’s snowfall surpassed the record established in 1870.
Although a tiny amount of water isn’t enough to create an snowman or get away the skis still a refreshing respite from the intense temperatures that the nation is experiencing this summer. The extreme heat of the summer has resulted in deaths with the death toll likely to surpass the more than 2300 people who died due to extreme heat in the summer of 2012 as per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
2024’s summer was so scorching that CDC created an instrument to inform the public about the dangers that could be posed by approaching heat waves. HeatRisk is a map that heat risk map allows people to easily assess their health risk and is particularly helpful for seniors or people with health issues like asthma. It’s also beneficial for women who are pregnant and young children.
The scorching temperatures have been blamed as a result of climate change scientists have said Earth is just four years from achieving the 1.5 Celsius (2.7 Fahrenheit) goal set by the historic Paris climate agreement of 2015.
