BERLIN (AP) — England striker Harry Kane finished Euro 2024 in a six-way tie for the Golden Boot top scorer as his team lost the final 2-1 to Spain. It was another individual accolade for a player yet to win a major trophy for club or country.
Kane finished the tournament tied with three goals, along with Spain midfielder Dani Olmo, Germany midfielder Jamal Musiala, Netherlands forward Cody Gakpo, Slovakia winger Ivan Schranz and Georgia striker Georges Mikautadze.
Kane has been the runner-up in two consecutive European Championship finals after England’s defeat to Italy three years ago. He was also an runner-up at one Champions League final and two English League Cups. He’s been awarded a number of individual accolades and accolades, including Bundesliga top scorer in the last season with Bayern Munich, but the German club went through the first time in a season without a trophy since 2012.
“It’s an opportunity that was missed. It’s not easy getting to this stage,” Kane told British broadcaster ITV of England’s defeat to Spain. “It requires incredible determination and determination to get to where we are, but you must seize the chance whenever it is presented and we’ve not been able to repeat it. In the men’s final of the European Championship, Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Czech striker Patrik Schick each scored five goals, but Ronaldo was declared the winner due to having an assist, while Schick did not have any.
In the old system, Olmo could have won the tiebreaker with his two assists and the highest score among players tied with three goals.
The last time three goals was enough to earn the Golden Boot was at Euro 2012 the Spanish player Fernando Torres took the prize. The tie-breaker was the player who had played the least minutes. If this had been the case to Euro 2024, the award was given to Slovakia’s Schranz.
UEFA declared Spain midfielder Rodri as the best most outstanding player as well Spain forward Lamine Yamal who was 17 on Saturday, was the youngest player of the tournament.
