Athletes will be competing for gold in this period of time, however an entirely different type that of gold stole the spotlight on Friday.

Between show tunes from “Les Miserables” and “Carmen,” the French heavy-metal group Gojira performed a head-banging performance in the Olympics opening ceremony, giving viewers a some degree of cultural shock.

First, she was welcomed by an unadorned Marie Antoinette, Gojira performed at the Conciergerie on the River Seine.

Who is Gojira the metal band from the opening ceremony?

Gojira is composed from Joe Duplantier, Mario Duplantier, Christian Andreu and Jean-Michel LaThe group consists of Jean-Michel La badie. They played at the Conciergerie which was the home of French monarchs during the medieval period.

It was an institution within it’s French Revolution, and Marie Antoinette was among the most well-known prisoners. Gojira performed alongside singer Marina Viotti.

The band’s name is based on the legend of Kaiju Godzilla The band were first referred to as Godzilla until 2001. They have three Grammy Award nominees and most recently released their album “Fortitude” in 2021.

Gojira performs metal, as well as a variety of subgenres like groove and progressive metal.
